Past Compositions and What I Hope to Learn

In the past, I have composed anything from lengthy research papers to frivolous blog posts (see my other blog, Metaphorical Pencil Shavings). I have won awards of distinction in poetry and extemporaneous speech. I have given several sermons and speeches in formal settings. I have composed small songs on piano and written harmonies and descants to be sung on existing songs. My compositions have been for myself and for others. I’m no stranger to art or its intricacies, nor am I new to the use of rhetorical strategies. My writing, I believe, has its own life and a voice unique to me.

I have not wanted to seem cocky, by any means, but I am confident in my abilities.

Therefore, I’m not expecting to learn anything new in this class. I am, however, certain that there is a need for me to take this class. Though I am confident, I also recognize that perfection does not exist. I know that writing is a tool in constant need of refinement. I feel that any words I spout can be arranged and rearranged to be better, more decisive, and more explanatory. I feel that practice is my only means of improvement. And I also feel that improvement is the only way to know I can express myself accurately and concisely.

But, I also feel that composition and expression are things that aren't dominated by essays or blog posts. Musicality and physicality play heavily into feeling and therefore expression. My work with food and the love of it is another way that I express my opinions. I feel that composing a menu or a dish at all is an intimate part of who I am and what I want to give to the world. I am, through delicious means, expressing love and curiosity.

  1. I look forward to your Project 4, which is our multimodal project that asks for something other than a traditional, "standard" essay. We'll have a few guidelines as to the topic for it, but then it's pretty much up to students to create whatever they wish. Maybe you'll end up composing a piece on the piano, making a delicious meal, or trying something new entirely.
